GPS Navigation in my Avalanche
My Mood: Good
Weather: Sunny
Tunes: None
So I have been visiting this website forum called Chevy Avalanche Fan Club its all about all the cool things you can do to your avalanche to void the warranty and well I just couldn't help myself. I was looking at all the cool things I wanted to do but really couldn't afford. I knew I couldn't afford to retrofit a cadillac navigation system into my truck for 2500 bucks but I did have a streetpilot that I rarely use but enjoy greatly when its in the vehicle. I just don't like it sitting on the dash. So I decided I did not need that cubby hole in my overhead console and instead would wire up my streetpilot. First I took down the overhead console which consisted of removing one screw and gently pulling back and forth until the brackets came loose. Second I undid the plug for the map lights and homelink and removed the mic for the onstar and stuffed it up into the headliner. Then I broke out the razor knife and the dremel. The dremel actally melted the console more than grinded it but after a while I had myself a nice hole.

Once I had the hole I needed some gps parts so onto ebay I went. From Ebay Store GPSGEEK I purchased an external antannae and a bare wires cable so I could get satellites (very important for GPS functionality) and power from the truck (removing the console everyday to change batteries doesn't sound that effecient). I ran the antannae from the drivers side down the door gaskets and around to the headliner and accross to the center. The bare wires were soldered into the homelink and maplight power supply Orange for power and black for ground. Then I strapped the GPS in with velcro straps.
Tada homemade navigation Cost 36 bucks for GPS parts and 1.25 for velcro. It doesn't fit quite flush but with a little more tweaking and some black slicone and it should look mighty nice. Plus my helper says its perfect. ( I never knew a GPS antannae could be so tasty and so much fun at the same time!!
